A drug designed to improve the performance of women's sexual performance has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD).
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in February in the journalJournal of the American Medical Associationfound that oral sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, improves women's sexual response in a double-blind clinical trial involving more than 300 women who were randomly assigned to receive a placebo or a treatment with sildenafil.
The study, by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, involved 200 women between the ages of 15 and 44, all taking sildenafil for a period of two weeks. The women were given the pill for a period of four to six months, while the men took the pill for six months.
The researchers also recruited 200 postmenopausal women with FSD who had not yet reached menopause and who had not yet reached menopause. They began taking the pill on day three of their last menstrual cycle, and continued the treatment for a further four weeks.
The menopause was the most frequent cause of side effects, with the most common being hot flashes and vaginal dryness. The women were also prescribed an oral medication called Cialis. Cialis is a PDE-5 inhibitor and has been shown to have a positive effect on women's sexual response, with the drug working as a much stronger and more effective treatment than Viagra.
The researchers concluded that the drug is effective for women with FSD who had taken it for more than four months, with no adverse reactions.

According to the study's authors, the drug's "inhibitory effect is associated with improved physical function and sexual desire in women with low FSD or who are more severely depressed."
